Look Up - October 9,
2001
"Look Up" is like many of our songs in the fact that
it came to me in the shower. All I actually got was the
line "When you're feeling down, look up" and the concept
of looking up Bible verses. I shared it with Pam and she
loved the idea and said, "That one is gonna be mine."
As we were selecting songs for our "Living Proof"
album, there was never any doubt that "Look Up" would be
included. The only problem occurred about three weeks
before we were scheduled to go in the studio and there
was still just one line of the song written. So we sent
the girls off to Grandma's house and started making a
list of our favorite Bible verses. After we had several
pages filled with verses it was time to start narrowing
down and coming up with creative rhymes. Pam headed for
the piano and I headed for the door. I walked down to the
end of our block and came back with the first verse. Pam
approved, so off I went down to the corner and came back
with the second verse. With a little more work I had the
choruses in place and the song was finished. God came
through again and Pam and I were pleased with the
result.
"Look Up" is a natural for us because both Pam and I
are passionate about the relevance of scripture for every
day life. The world is full of questions and we believe
the Bible has an answer for each one. Just look at the
seven verses we selected and the wide range of concerns
these few scriptures address:
---> Setting priorities - Matthew 6:33
(But seek first the kingdom of God and His
righteousness, and all these things shall be added to
you.)
---> Facing difficult times - James 1:2-3
(Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face
trials of many kinds, because you know that the
testing of your faith develops perseverance.)
---> Forgiveness of sins - Psalm 103:12 (as
far as the east is from the west, so far has he
removed our transgressions from us.)
---> Building self-esteem - 1 Peter 5:4 (And
when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the
crown of glory that will never fade away.)
---> Dealing with death and sorrow - Isaiah
25:8a (He will swallow up death forever, And the
Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces)
---> Encouragement and peace - John 16:33
("These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you
may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but
take courage; I have overcome the world.")
I challenge you to try it for yourself. Ask God to
speak to you and then dig into His word. You will find
that there truly is "power in these pages" just waiting
for you to "Look Up."
