God Groovin' - July 3,
2001
When it comes to Pam and I recording our vocals for a
project, we find we are strongest in different areas. For
instance, Pam is an awesome harmony singer and can pick
her part out in a flash, while I have to learn mine note
by note. For lead vocals, I usually get mine fairly
quickly while Pam sometimes takes a little longer to work
hers out. The one area where there is no question is who
shines is "finding the groove". The "groove" is the
underlying beat or feel of the music that makes your feet
want to dance. It's what makes a song cool. I have no
problem writing songs with a cool groove, but when it
comes time to sing them, I'm in trouble. To sing "in the
groove" you must let the music guide and show through
your singing. It's a subtle thing that is more felt than
heard, but it makes all the difference in the final
product. For Pam it comes naturally, but I have to work
to keep my focus on the feel and not just the notes. I
have to surrender my tendency to sing it my own way and
submit to the music.
I wonder how many of us are "in the groove" in our
Christian service. Do we serve God on our terms or His?
Are we doing His work the way we think it should be done,
or are we allowing Him to do His work through us ... on
His terms? When people look at you or me are they seeing
a good Christian worker, or are they seeing God working
through an obedient servant? God's will is the rhythm and
music that flows through all His creation. We have the
choice to sing our part our way or to submit to Him and
let His will guide and show through our work. In music it
makes the difference between an amateur recording and a
professional one. In Christian service it can make the
difference between a life of good works and an adventure
filled with the abundance of God's blessing. The choice
is yours, the music is playing, now how are you gonna
sing?
