Where's The Beef? - June 26,
2001
Pam and I watched the Dove Awards the other night and
I was appalled by two facts. First of all, I watched all
night and we didn't win a single award (I guess it would
have helped to have been nominated). Seriously, the
problem we had with the program was the lack of spiritual
truth and message in the songs. One song went on for
several minutes with the gist of the lyrics being, "I
fell down, I got back up again - a saint is a sinner who
falls down and gets back up again." Let me tell you, if
God doesn't do the lifting, it ain't worth singing about.
If He does, give Him the credit for it.
The Bible is our source of truth, the meat that
nourishes us as we continue on our Christian walk. Just
as newborn babies need milk and then solid food as they
grow, newborn Christians need milk (basic biblical
truths) and then will desire meat (deeper study of the
word) as they grow in the image of Christ. Our job as
messengers of the good news is to present both the milk
and meat of scripture to our listeners. There needs to be
substance in all we say. Far too many sermons and songs I
am hearing today are empty, with nothing to nourish a
hungry soul.
I don't mean this as a criticism, but a challenge.
After all, the message can only be as deep as the
messenger. While we are sharing God's good news with
others, we must make sure we continue to grow by feasting
on the meat of scripture. This is not just for the
preachers and singers, we are all called to take the word
to the world. So open the bible and grab your fork and
knife ... it's dinner time!
