Nickels & Dimes - July 12, 2000

 

The Rehabilitation Institute where Pam is receiving her therapy specializes in both spinal cord and brain injuries. There is one huge gym where everyone does their Physical and Occupational therapy, so we get to see lots of folks with different types and levels of injuries. Believe me, it has been an eye-opening experience.

Yesterday while Pam was working on sitting without assistance, (she made it for 5 minutes twice!!!) I watched some of the other patients and the activities they were learning to master. My eyes stopped on one young man in a wheelchair. He was probably in his early twenties and by looking at him you couldn't tell there was anything wrong. I gathered he had been in some sort of accident and had taken quite a blow to the head. In front of him on a table was a small mound of coins. His challenge for the day - to sort the nickels, dimes pennies and quarters into separate piles.

Right then it hit me, most of the people we have been singing to for the last few years are spoiled and they don't even know it. We talk about our problems and difficulties and how life isn't fair and how hard it is to cope, yet all the time we have so many blessings we take for granted. God does care about how we feel. He doesn't want us to barely scrape through life, He wants us to live victoriously! So the next time you're feeling down and decorating for your personal pity party, try this. Reach into your pocket or purse and take out a handful of coins. If you can tell the nickels from the dimes, send up a prayer of thanks. While you're at it, send up another for those who can't.
